Paignton played host to the all new Intercity Express Train from London Paddington on Saturday 28th July.
The new service train is a 9-carriage long class 800 train and is the first Intercity Express Train to travel from London beyond Exeter in passenger service, marking another milestone in the roll out of the brand new fleet.
Kevin Foster, Mp for Torbay said:
The arrival of GWR’s new Intercity Express Trains into our bay is a great moment not just for the passengers who will use them, but our region as a whole as these trains speed to the south west for the first time. These sleek new trains will replace the current fleet built in the 1970’s, improving journey times, comfort and reliability.”
One hundred and seventy years after Brunel built the GWR his legacy lives on as these iconic trains use his iconic coastal railway.
Intercity Express Trains New Variations Introduced
Devon and Cornwall will further benefit from the Intercity Express when the new and regional specific 802 variations are introduced to the area later this summer.
The new trains will deliver up to 24% more seats per train than the current High Speed Trains.
The current High Speed trains will be replaced by these newer Intercity Express models.
Legroom has also been extended on the new trains and an at-seat food and drink service complete with improved air conditioning to make your longer journeys more comfortable.
Taking care of the hills
The new variants, 802, have been specifically designed to be able to cope with the hilly terrain that we are used to here in South Devon.
The 802 trains are slowly coming into service and you can expect to see the new Intercity Express Service on both the main lines and also on the Riviera Line as well.
The new Intercity Express Trains means that travelling to London Paddington is now quicker than ever and easier.
