A lot of us will be applauding the heatwave, and rightly so.

However, with the heat comes the increase of Sunburn and for those who are unwell further issues.

The Met Office has issued a warning that parts of Torbay could experience ‘heatwave’ conditions this week.

Fortunately, we’ve got some great tips to help keep you safe during the time when the sun is at its peak.

  • Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
  • Wear sunscreen of at least SPF-15 with UVA protection
  • Avoid extreme physical exertion
  • Wear loose cotton clothing
  • Drink lots of none alcoholic drinks, especially water
  • Seek shade
  • Wear sunglasses and a hat
  • Turn off non-essential lights and electrical equipment, as these can generate a lot of heat
  • Look out for others, especially those who maybe isolated, elderly, ill or very young people and ensure they are kept cool
  • Never leave anyone in closed parked or moving vehicle especially infants, young children and animals

Stay cool in Torbay this week.

Keep cool this sports day

Sports Days are already well underway around the bay, so make you take particular care when out in the sun for long periods of time,.

Make sure you take a cap, and plenty of sunscreen, you can apply this more than once, don’t forget your water bottle and positive cheers.

Keep your house cool

Indoors it can get very hot as well, so ensure you keep parts of the house cool.

Your bedroom and living space can be kept cool by closing the curtains on windows that face the sun and then opening the windows during cooler times or overnight.

Ensure none essential lights or electrical appliances are turned off as these generate heat.

Advice for health and social care workers

Please ensure you regularly check vulnerable patients, share sun safety messages, ensure the room temperatures are below 26 degrees and finally ensure patients have access to water and ice.

Enjoy the sunshine, but do take the necessary precautions.

Further advice is available from the Torbay Council website.
